The U.S. FDA categorized the recalls as “Class I,” meaning that the adverse consequences or death risks posed by the products are of the most serious type.
FDA records show that Fresenius knew of the heart risks of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte and sent a memo to doctors at its own clinics, but that it didn’t warn other dialysis centers about the risk.
Patients use GranuFlo and NaturaLyte in conjunction with undergoing dialysis, but the medication has been found to cause serious cardiac problems—and even death—which is related to how the body converts the drugs into bicarbonate.
