Dialysis patients across the country have filed lawsuits alleging that their medications have caused them injuries—or worse.
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte lawsuits allege that claimants or their loved ones suffered heart attacks—often fatal— as a result of using the medications at Fresenius Medical Care centers and other dialysis locations. Fresenius is the world’s largest dialysis group. The lawsuits claim that the products’ labels and warnings were not adequate about notifying of the risks associated with use of the drugs.
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Recalled Because of Serious Side Effects
Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were recalled in March 2012 because they contained more of an ingredient the body converts into bicarbonate then compared to competitors—According to the New York Times, doctors were not accounting for the extra bicarbonate from GranuFlo when determining how much bicarbonate to prescribe separately. The potential result is the overdose of bicarbonate, the article said, which could lead to a patient developing heart problems.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration categorized the GranuFlo and NaturaLyte recalls each as a “Class I recall,” meaning the adverse consequences or death risks posed by the product make it the most serious type of recall.
Overdoses of bicarbonate from GranuFlo and NaturaLyte can cause these side effects:
- Heart attack;
- Low blood pressure;
- Low potassium in the blood;
- Low levels of oxygen in the blood;
- Excessive carbon dioxide in the blood; and
- Cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).
